The Finnish-Canadian Business Club arranged a morning coffee session on 4 December 2015 to discuss the Canadian federal election held in October. Guest speaker was Counsellor Tapio Tolvanen from the Department of the Americas and Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The election campaign as well as the results, the new government and its policies were discussed among participants. After a historically long campaign, the Liberal Party led by Justin Trudeau won 184 seats in the Parliament, allowing it to form a majority government with Mr. Trudeau becoming the Prime Minister. Voter turnout at the election was 69 %.

The new government has emphasized the importance of battle against climate change. Economy and trade are also high on the government’s agenda. In the new government, there is an equal number of men and women.
