Why Namibia Should Be on Finnish Companies' Radar

Namibia is attracting increasing international attention as a stable, resource-rich, and investment-friendly destination. While the country has long been known for its mining industry, recent developments in critical minerals, combined with ambitious efforts to diversify the economy through renewable energy and industrialisation, have expanded its appeal among international investors and businesses.
For Finnish companies, Namibia offers opportunities in sectors that closely align with Finland’s areas of expertise. Mining, clean energy, circular economy solutions, digitalisation, and education are all fields where Finnish know-how can support Namibia’s development goals while creating new commercial partnerships.
Critical Minerals Driving Growth
Mining remains a cornerstone of Namibia’s economy, contributing approximately 13% of GDP and generating more than half of the country’s export earnings. In addition to its well-established uranium and diamond industries, Namibia possesses significant reserves of lithium, tin, copper, gold, zinc, and rare earth elements.
As global demand for critical minerals continues to rise, Namibia is positioning itself as an increasingly important supplier for the green transition.
At the same time, the country’s ambitions extend beyond the extraction of raw materials. Namibia is actively promoting local beneficiation and mineral processing to ensure that more value is created domestically. This creates opportunities not only for mining companies but also for technology providers, equipment manufacturers, and industrial partners.
Mining Expo Brings Industry Leaders Together
The growing importance of critical minerals, local value addition, and industrial development was evident at the recent Mining Expo & Conference Namibia 2026 in Windhoek. The annual three-day event brought together government representatives, mining companies, investors, and international partners to discuss the future of Namibia’s mining sector and its role in the country’s broader economic development.
A Finnish delegation comprising representatives from Mining Finland, Metso, Normet, Valmet, Comadev, and Robit participated in the expo and related meetings in August. The programme included visits to mining operations in the Erongo Region, discussions with local stakeholders, meetings with government officials, and a networking reception hosted by the Embassy of Finland.
The visit highlighted the growing interest in the Namibian market. Finland is internationally recognised for its expertise in mining technologies across the entire value chain, from exploration and extraction to mineral processing, automation, and environmental solutions. As Namibia seeks to strengthen local value addition, Finnish technologies and know-how can play an important role in supporting these efforts.
Promising Examples of Cooperation
There are already encouraging examples of collaboration between Finland and Namibia. One such initiative is the ProLith Project, a partnership between Andrada Mining and the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), supported by approximately EUR 4.5 million in EU funding. The project aims to recover lithium and other critical minerals from Namibia’s Uis tin mine while strengthening local processing capabilities and supporting Namibia’s industrialisation objectives.
Beyond its technical objectives, the project demonstrates how European and African partners can work together to strengthen critical mineral value chains, develop local expertise, and create sustainable industrial growth.
A Strong Appetite for Partnership
One message stood out clearly during the recent delegation visit: Namibian stakeholders are eager to build partnerships with international companies and investors.
Discussions with government representatives, mining operators, and business leaders consistently highlighted a demand for new technologies, skills development, responsible mining practices, and increased local value addition. These are all areas where Finnish companies can make a meaningful contribution.
As the importance of critical minerals and clean energy solutions continues to grow, Namibia is becoming an increasingly attractive market for Finnish companies looking beyond their traditional markets and seeking new avenues for growth. The interest and engagement seen during the Mining Expo suggest that more Finnish businesses are beginning to recognise Namibia’s potential as a long-term strategic partner.
For Finnish companies with expertise in mining technology, sustainable industrial solutions, clean energy, automation, and skills development, Namibia offers more than a promising market. It offers the opportunity to contribute to the growth of one of Africa’s most dynamic emerging economies while building long-term commercial partnerships.
