As economic statecraft increasingly shapes global relations, tariffs and market controls have emerged as the defining tools of great power competition. Combined with the fallout from ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, these policies are fundamentally rewiring international trade networks. This broader geoeconomic shift is now transforming the Western Hemisphere, sparking a regional nearshoring boom, fuelled by a reorientation of US economic foreign policy which has redefined the strategic roles for Mexico and Latin America.
Mr. Tomi Kristeri is a Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). His research focuses on geoeconomics and economic security policy.
