WHY ALGERIA?

In the most recent harvest season, Algeria was able to cover only 40% of its grain requirements by domestic production. Algeria has traditionally been one of the world’s biggest grain importers. For some years, Algeria was also the world’s largest wheat importer. Most of the Algerian grain imports comes from France, but in recent years the country has been actively glancing at other countries, including Northern Europe. In 2014 Finland exported, via international grain traders, more than EUR 9 million worth of barley and more than EUR 4 million worth of wheat. Grain trade in Algeria is very concentrated to the state grain storage (OAIC), which buys the greater part of the cereal imports.

One of the four priorities in the Algerian five-year plan is agriculture. A key aim is to increase the productivity and output of the sector. So far, the Algerian agricultural production covers less than half of the domestic requirements, but the development potential is considerable. Mechanization of agriculture is one of the key ways to increase agricultural productivity, thus creating a promising market outlook for agricultural machines and devices. Sampo-Rosenlew Oy has already been successful in Algeria with a combine harvester factory, which is a good reference for other Finnish agricultural machinery manufacturers. One of the key competitive factors in Algeria is currently the opportunity to invest part of the equipment composition to Algeria.

Doing business in Algeria requires good government relations. The Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has in recent years developed small-scale co-operation with the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture. In connection with the visit of Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen in November, the first memorandum of understanding on the objectives of the cooperation will be signed. At the same time the aim is to open doors for Finnish companies.
